What is Homeopathy?

Since the very beginning human beings have been looking for the perfect way of treating the sick and curing the disease. Through trials and errors and experience they developed different methods, some are based on scientific principles and others are based on assumptions and beliefs.

Homeopathy is a unique and holistic way of treating and curing the sick. It is based on fixed laws of nature. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician, is the founder of Homeopathy. Disgruntled by the conventional way of treating the sick, he gave up his medical practice and started translating medical books for a living. It was during the process of translating “A Treatise on Materia Medica '' written by a Scottish physician and chemist, Dr. William Cullen, Hehnemann was stricken by the description of Cinchona (Peruvian bark) commonly known by homeopaths as China.

According to Dr. Cullen, Cinchona cured Malaria and its symptoms of periodic fever, sweating, and palpitations due to its bitterness. Hahnemann, unconvinced by this explanation, decided to experiment on himself by taking Cinchona twice a day which led to the production of the above mentioned well-known Malaria-like symptoms. This process is called proving, or testing a remedy. This experiment made a breakthrough and opened the doors to the marvelous world of Homeopathy.

Following the Cinchona experiment, Hahnemann conducted provings with different remedies on himself, his relatives and friends. He also compiled signs and symptoms of victims of accidental poisoning (accidental proving).

Soon he was back in his medical practice with his new philosophy and methodology of curing the sick. According to him, there are three ways of treating a disease:

Preventive medicine – removing the cause of the disease e.g. disease inducing factors which could be anything from stress, bad living conditions, lack of nutrition, etc.

Allopathy – healing by opposites e.g. painkillers for pain, antipyretics for fever, laxatives for constipation

Homeopathy – healing by similar e.g. symptoms which are produced by a remedy when given to a healthy person cures similar symptoms if present in a diseased person.

The first and fundamental law of homeopathy is “Similia Similibus Curentur” meaning “like cures like”. That is if a medicine taken by a healthy person produces some symptoms, the same symptoms if present in a patient can be cured by the same medicine in minute doses. This method of cure was given the name “Homeopathy” from the Greek word Homoios which means similar and Pathy meaning suffering in order to differentiate it from the conventional way of treatment which is Allo which means opposites and Pathy meaning suffering.

Homeopathy treats the patient and not the disease. In classical homeopathy, the person is taken as a whole instead of treating any particular organ system or disease label. The individuality of the patient and of the remedy is of prime importance in finding the best similimum in curing the disease. Every person is a unique personality with his or her own likings, disliking and idiosyncrasies. To find the correct similimum, not only the physical symptoms but, if present, the mental and emotional symptoms of the patient are also taken into account to make a complete symptom picture. This is because the disease or symptoms do not exist alone but are the result of how the patient as a whole responds to the received stress.

In Homeopathy we use the minimum dose which can cure the disease. It is a well-known fact that a medicinal agent if used in large doses can destroy an organism whereas the same agent in small doses can stimulate it.

Unlike lifeless machines which are dependent on others for maintenance and repair, nature has blessed our body with the ability to grow and repair itself as it is not a man made machine. This is due to the vital force or the vitality in our body that the different organs and systems in our body coordinate and resonate in harmony supporting each other to maintain a healthy organism. This energy body or vital force departs when we die and our bodies cease to function and start decaying.

Health exists when this vital force is capable of balancing and repairing the body and our organ systems effectively. We become ill when the vital force is disturbed or fails to effectively handle the balancing mechanism of our organism with the stresses of life. Hahnemann recognised this fact and called it a vital force. Health is basically the absence of disease (dis-ease) and the ability of the human body to withstand stresses at all levels. That is health is freedom to react at the mental, psychological, emotional, and physical level in a healthy way. In disease, this personal freedom is limited.

To cure a disease, we have to take the totality of the symptoms, select the best similimum, and select the correct minimum dose according to the vitality of the patient. When the remedy resonates with the vital force of a diseased person, it acts at the level of the vital force and strengthens the immune system of the person.

Homeopathy is an art as well as a science of treating the sick. It has a potential of serving the ailing humanity. Homeopathy has been neglected and has not been given the due importance it deserves. It has all the potential of helping the suffering humanity. It needs dedicated and fully committed medical professionals to further research and expand its boundaries. As a matter of fact I believe Homeopathy does not need us, humanity needs homeopathy.

Q: Do homeopathic remedies contain alcohol?

Yes and no.

Alcohol is used as a stabilizer and preservative in the manufacturing process of liquid homeopathic remedies. Sugar pills are then medicated with this liquid but the alcohol evaporates off them during the drying process so they are then alcohol free.

If homeopathic remedies are supplied for use in liquid form, alcohol may have been added at the final stage of preparation to preserve this liquid. If you don’t want alcohol in your remedy, ask your homeopath to give the remedy in pill form. Then keep it tightly sealed in a dark place away from strong odors and sunlight.

Q:Is homeopathy legal in Canada?

Homeopathy is regulated in Canada. The Proclamation of the Homeopathy Act, 2007 took place on April 1, 2015, making Homeopathy a newly regulated health profession in the province of Ontario under the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Q: Are homeopathic remedies safe?

Yes. Studies have established that homeopathic medicines are well tolerated. In fact, according to R. Ullman and J. Reichenberg-Ullman, authors of the book The Patient's Guide to Homeopathic Medicine, homeopathy is one of the safest methods of treatment.

The safety of homeopathic medicine is also confirmed by the fact that during preparation, the substance that is to be used as a medicine is diluted several times. Hence, the toxic effect of substances that are potentially harmful is greatly diminished.

Q: How long do homeopathic medicines take to act?

The period that it takes for homeopathic medicines to work depends on different factors, which include the condition being treated as well as the history and severity of the condition. In general, well prepared homeopathic medicines will start to act fairly quickly and eliminate the symptoms of an illness within a few days.
